A new $64 million processing and packaging plant supporting more than 100 jobs has opened at Mickleham’s new Merrifield Business Park.

Family-owned smallgoods manufacturer D’Orsogna had outgrown capacity at its Mount Waverley  factory and State Government cash helped it build the new home for its cooking, smoking, cooling, storing, slicing and packaging needs on Australia’s east coast.

The business has grown from a family butcher shop in West Perth in 1949 to now supplying Woolworths, Coles, Subway, Hungry Jack’s and other businesses across the nation. More than 160 workers are now based at Merrifield.

D’Orsogna managing director Greig Smith said the company had worked collaboratively with both state and local governments to expand its presence.

“D’Orsogna is pleased to complete the establishment of its new Victorian facility in Melbourne’s north and we welcome our incredibly diverse and skilled workforce,” he said.

Jobs, Innovation and Trade Minister Martin Pakula said it was another vote of confidence in Victoria as the country’s premium food capital.

“We’re proud to have backed this expansion by D’Orsogna that has brought jobs to Melbourne’s north and opened up even more opportunities for export and growth across this vital sector,” he said.

Yuroke state Labor MP Ros Spence said 200 new jobs in Melbourne’s north was great news for the local economy. D’Orsogna hoped the new state-of-the-art facility would help advance its growth in both domestic and export markets. The company supplies products under the “D’Orsogna” and “Riverland” brands.
